Labor supporting the revitalisation of Australian Ukrainian Community and Culture Centre in Noble Park
THURSDAY, 10 April 2025
A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will commit $225,000 to restore and enhance a key community centre for Australian Ukrainians in Noble Park. The centre urgently needs repairs and upgrades to restore its space, enhance services and continue supporting the Ukrainian community.
This election commitment will go towards the Ukrainian Community Centre, run by Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (Noble Park Branch), an active and inclusive community that celebrates Ukrainian culture, language, history and traditions.
It will fund urgent infrastructure upgrades, including roof leaks, plumbing issues and the installation of air-conditioning – providing much-needed relief for children, seniors and the wider community. It will also include child-safe fencing and the redevelopment of the children’s playground.
The Ukrainian Community Centre, built in 1969 by Ukrainian migrants, continues to serve as a vital hub for various activities, including study spaces, a seniors' club, English classes for refugees and a parish meeting place.
The building continues to be the beating heart of the Ukrainian community in Melbourne’s south-east and a meeting place for the newly arrived Ukrainian refugees.
This investment from the Albanese Labor Government will ensure a sustainable future for the Ukrainian Community Centre. It reflects the Albanese Labor Government’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Australia’s diverse cultural fabric.
Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.
Comments attributable to The Hon. Clare O’Neil MP, Federal Member for Hotham:
“The Ukrainian Community Centre in Noble Park has been a beloved hub for people of Ukrainian heritage in Melbourne’s south-east for many decades, celebrating their culture, language and traditions – and offering incredible support to each other.
“However, the Centre requires significant upgrades so it can continue to be a welcoming, functional space for future generations.
“Many in this community have loved ones in Ukraine and the Centre helps them support each other while also assisting new arrivals. Australians share in their emotional strain and feel great empathy for this community, so I know Hotham locals will take pride in the Centre’s revitalisation as a place of comfort, support and strength.
“This investment from the Albanese Labor Government will ensure the Centre remains a sustainable, vibrant hub, reflecting our shared support for the Ukrainian community, both here and abroad.”
Comments attributable to The Hon. Julian Hill MP, Federal Member for Bruce:
“As Australia has welcomed families fleeing Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Community Centre in Noble Park has experienced a wave of new activity. It has long been the hub for our local Australian-Ukrainian community, fostering connections to culture, language, history and traditions over many decades.
“Given the new pressures and higher use, the centre needs upgrades to keep delivering essential services.
“This investment by a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will help the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria to refresh fit-for-purpose spaces and continue their work for the next generation.”
