CLARE O’NEIL MP
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HOTHAM
$3.6m for equitable and accessible playing fields and parks
Wednesday, 15 April 2025
A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will commit $3.6 million to creating more equitable, inclusive and accessible playing fields and parks across Hotham.
This election commitment comprises four local projects across, and in partnership with, the four local governments that cover Hotham – meaning that no matter where you live in Hotham, you’re no more than a few kilometres from one of these spots.
The projects include $900,000 each towards the following projects:
• Bailey Reserve Upgrade in Bentleigh East (City of Glen Eira). Home to the East Bentleigh Soccer Club and Glen Eira Moorabbin Softball Club (with over 75 per cent female membership). The current facilities lack proper amenities for women and girls. The upgrade plan includes new changerooms and improved lighting.
• Ross Reserve Amenities Upgrades in Noble Park (City of Greater Dandenong). Construction of female-inclusive changerooms, amenities and a shade structure for the athletics track, which is used by more than 60 schools and sports clubs.
• Princess Highway Reserve Playground in Oakleigh East (City of Monash). This will include several elements to enhance the experience for people with disabilities, including a sensory garden.
• Namatjira Reserve Upgrade in Clayton South (City of Kingston). This upgrade includes distance markers, security lighting and an outdoor gym, making parks and tracks safer. It removes barriers to gyms by offering a free fitness option where kids can play nearby, providing an option for those who find gyms costly or hard to access.
Hotham is a vibrant, multicultural community that values accessibility and fairness.
These projects address gaps in these areas across parts of the electorate, reflecting both local values and the Albanese Labor Government’s commitment to inclusion.
Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.
Comments attributable to Clare O’Neil MP, Federal Member for Hotham:
"In the past 18 months, I hosted successful forums for women and people with disabilities – with more than 300 stories shared before the events even began.
“The common themes around barriers were clear: the need for recognition, safety, agency and equitable access.
"These projects aren't just capital works – they represent a commitment to creating safer, accessible spaces for women, people with disabilities and families, enhancing agency, safety and dignity for those who need it most.
“Investing in inclusion boosts community engagement across the board. Just take the example of a local club in Oakleigh South that used a grant to upgrade women’s bathrooms – they doubled their membership in two years.
"I'm proud to advocate for fair, equitable local investment and to be part of an Albanese Labor Government that’s dedicated to strengthening community connections and supporting all of our incredible communities."
