Today is World AIDS Day.
World AIDS Day raises awareness across the world and in the community about HIV and AIDS. The national World AIDS Day theme for Australia in 2018 is: "Everybody Counts."
More than 1,000 Australians are still diagnosed with HIV every year and in some areas we are going backwards. Shockingly, the rate of new infections in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is now above other Australians for the first time ever.
I'm proud that a Shorten Labor Government will renew the effort to end HIV transmissions in Australia with a $53 million commitment to step up the fight against the disease.
Importantly, we'll expand access to the game-changing drug PrEP.
Also, a shout out to British Labour MP, Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP, who yesterday announced in Parliament that he is HIV positive. His amazing bravery will help overcome the stigma people living with HIV face in their everyday lives.
