As Labor, supporting the LGBTIQ community will always be a priority. That's why I'm so proud to say that Federal Labor will support the Victorian Pride Centre project with a $10 million investment.
Based in St Kilda in Melbourne's south, the centre will be home to vital to services and LGBTIQ community organisations. Eight major LGBTIQ community organisations will be based in the Centre, including the radio station JOY 94.9, counselling service Switchboard and the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, among others.
JOY 94.9 will also receive an extra $600,000 to build new studios and upgrade to digital broadcasting. This is so important for the community, as JOY 94.9 is the only radio station in Australia to broadcast specifically to the LGBTIQ community. Our investment will help JOY 94.9's excellent work reach an even bigger audience.
Our $10 million investment commitment means that the Victorian Pride Centre project is fully funded. It's followed other significant commitments from the Andrews Labor Government in Victoria, the City of Port Phillip and the Victorian AIDS Council (Thorne Harbour Health). This was truly a team effort.
I firmly believe that no one should face discrimination because of who they love. I've stood with the LGBTIQ community on marriage equality and I want to make sure that the LGBTIQ community in Victoria has access to the support and services they need. Labor is proud to support the Victorian Pride Centre.
