A while ago, I was contacted by a woman named Rebecca. Bec had just been diagnosed with brain cancer, and she wanted to share some of her experience with me. She's staying strong and positive, though her prognosis - like most diagnosed with this disease - is worrying.
Bec's story stuck with me, in part because she's about my age, and the mum of a child about the same age as my eldest. And the thought of having to plan my kids' future with me potentially not in it, it just gutted me.
I lost my dad when I was 11 after a long illness, so I know something of the awful, awful conversations you have to have when a child might lose a parent.
Especially when it involves brain cancer. As a society, we're just not doing enough about this disease. Despite being a big killer, it doesn't receive much public research funding.
Government has to improve on this, and I'm working on that front.
But I wanted to share a site where you can donate to research: https://www.curebraincancer.org.au/donations. This is also a terrific resource to find out a bit more about this problem - it would be great if you could check it out.
And please spend a minute sending Bec your good thoughts for a speedy recovery.
